Introduction

My first serious sit in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt I discovered that exploring off the beaten path was nearly as enjoyable as the game’s main story. A minor pink mark on the map could lead to a bizarre encounter, a monster contract, or some memorable adventure that I wouldn’t have stumbled upon otherwise.

That curiosity hasn’t changed for me. You never really know what you’ll find around the next corner.

Step Into the Game

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open-world, action role-playing game (RPG) developed by CD PROJEKT RED. In it, you control Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer, as he journeys through a war-weary fantasy world searching for a young girl, Ciri, who is very important to him but whose story is bigger than that.

The world is vast. Large cities, tiny villages, wastelands, forests, swamps, ships, mountain ranges, and lonely outposts are all packed into an environment that felt alive to me in a way I wasn’t expecting.

The focus is primarily on storytelling, but it’s not like the game runs through you. You can follow the main quests, investigate contracts, explore empty ruins, hunt down monsters, collect gear, play Gwent, or just cruise the countryside on Roach.

And that’s when things start to get interesting.

The Complete Edition comes with the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, meaning you’ll have access to many more quests, characters, gear, and narrative than you can handle in a single play session.

How Do You Play

The game is a combination of exploration, swordplay, magic, leveling, crafting, investigation, and dialogue choices. Before confronting an enemy, preparing is more important than you might think.

Investigate the environment for clues and learn the habits of the beast, make bombs, stock up on potions, buy or craft gear, and decide which Signs could be useful in the fight.

Swordsmanship itself is easy to learn but can be pretty deep. Geralt can attack rapidly, perform heavy swings, dodge out of the way, roll, block, and parry enemy strikes, and cast Signs to influence the combat.

Each of the five major Signs can temporarily disable enemies, prevent damage, manipulate opponents, or change the overall flow of the battle. Selecting the right combination can allow for a much easier fight.

Levelling the character adds even more options to that system. You can unlock new Skills around combat, Signs, crafting, and more to create different play styles as you go.

Combat isn’t the whole game, though.

Your choices in conversations impact your relationships and the world around you, and some plot lines change significantly based on what you say. This is another reason why I enjoyed pursuing side quests that, on paper, didn’t matter quite so much.

Why Should You Use It

The advantage of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the variety of different ways you can play without it feeling like a random assortment of different activities.

You may go on a monster contract and start by tracking down an animal, analyzing the environment, and finishing with a boss fight; or you might start chatting with a character and end up on a whole new quest with unexpected ramifications. These outcomes are normal.

The world rewards patience.

You don’t have to head straight toward a series of objectives with giant arrows pointing you along the way. In fact, some of my favorite plays came from taking the minor detour and choosing to ignore the main story line for a little while.

Leveling up your character offers a nice sense of rhythm. You acquire new gear, find stronger tools, hone abilities, craft useful items, and slowly gain the upper hand against more difficult monsters.

And the Blood and Wine extension pack adds still more depth with its Toussaint region and focus on new characters. Hearts of Stone offers a darker tale of its own.

The PC version provides many options for managing display settings and controller/keyboard input to ensure you can play comfortably on the platform of your choice.

Takeaway

What’s wonderful about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is that it offers so many unique ways to keep exploring. You’re not simply crossing a massive map because the game has nothing left to tell you.

There are stories buried in forests, roads, fields, ruins, and corners that can take an entire game session in a totally unexpected direction. And that’s what keeps the experience feeling fresh for me.
